The visit of the Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr Etienne Schneider to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been the occasion to launch preparations for the Luxemburgish participation in Expo 2020 Dubai. This is a reflection of the longstanding friendship and strong partnership between the two countries. In June 2016, in a letter addressed to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel had expressed the country's intention to participate in this major event. Luxembourg is thus one of the first countries to officially confirm participation in Expo 2020 Dubai. This step marks a new milestone in the historically good relations between the two countrie                                                                                                            From left to right: HE Etienne Schneider, HH  Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, HE Maggy Nagel    During his recent visit to the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister Mr Etienne Schneider met His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Expo 2020 Dubai Higher Committee and Chairman of Dubai Airports and Emirates Airline. He also met, on the Expo site, Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed welcomed Luxembourg: ‘Dubai is a place of connections – a point where the world meets. I warmly welcome Luxembourg which today has become the latest nation to formally commit to take part. It now joins us in creating this global platform for collaboration. I look forward to strengthening our bilateral relations, as we work together on our preparations to host Expo 2020.’ Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg Mr. Etienne Schneider said: ’I am deeply impressed by the remarkable progress achieved on the exciting journey towards Expo 2020 Dubai. Luxembourg is fully committed to contributing its humble part to make this significant event a resounding success.’ Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, and Director General, Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, said: ’We warmly welcome the appointment of Her Excellency Maggy Nagel, the former Minister of Culture and Housing, as the Commissioner General of Luxembourg to the Expo. The UAE looks forward to working closely with all stakeholders in Luxembourg on our journey to 2020 and to building a programme of engagement that will not only strengthen our bilateral relations but also, will serve as a platform for Luxembourg to promote its national priorities to a global audience.’ Her Excellency Al Hashimy added that ’To date, we have received 70 national commitments from countries from all around the world and we look forward to welcoming more participants in the coming months ahead. We are very excited about the positive receptivity that our Expo has had and we will continue to work diligently to secure not only a confirmed presence, but also a high quality exposition.‘     From left to right: Mr Loïc Bertoli, HE Maggy Magel, HE Etienne Schneider, HE Reem Al Hashimy, HE Nicole Bintner-Bakshian, Mr Daniel Da Cruz    This partnership is a continuation of the good economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries and reflects the interest of Luxembourg towards ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the theme of Expo 2020 Dubai. Luxembourg’s national priorities closely align with the theme, as it is committed to being an open, and dynamic country that seeks to foster and support international cooperation, much like the UAE. Luxembourg’s main themes for participation will be centered on generating economic growth in a manner which is sustainable and respectful, both on earth and in space. Luxembourg’s strong history in telecommunications and satellite operations reflects Expo 2020 Dubai’s sub-theme of ‘Mobility’, which will examine the creation of smarter and more productive connections, physically and virtually. The Deputy Prime Minister also met his Emirati counterpart, the Minister of Economy Eng. Sultan Al Mansouri to discuss the excellent economic relations between Luxembourg and the UAE: bilateral trade between both countries reached € 580 million in 2015 and 30 companies from Luxembourg are already active in the UAE. A number of memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements between both countries exist a.o. in the areas of investment protection, non-double taxation, aviation and financial services.   Meeting at the UAE Ministry of Economy
Pierre Gramegna, Minister of Finance, had a meeting this 12 November 2015 in Brussels with HE Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy of the UAE. *HE Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Economy Minister & HE Pierre Gramegna, Luxembourg Finance Minister The meeting was a follow-up to a mission to the United Arab Emirates, presided by HRH Crown Prince Guillaume and headed by Minister Pierre Gramegna in March 2015, and to the participation of Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in the World Islamic Economic Forum in Dubai in October 2014. Pierre Gramegna and Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri discussed bilateral relations between Luxembourg and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the economic and political situation in Europe and the Middle East. Particular reference was made to the refugee crisis and its financial implications. The interlocutors also provided an update on developments in taxation and transparency at international level, in the spirit of a level playing field. The ministers explored the scopes for closer cooperation between the two countries in the economic, financial, and research areas. Some of these will be worked out at the next meeting of the Cooperation Council on Islamic finance which will be held in Luxembourg in March 2016. During their meeting the ministers have raised the possibility to expand the mandate of the Council into a privileged instrument of partnership between the two countries. Pierre Gramegna is in Brussels for negotiations on the European budget which have entered the phase of the Conciliation Committee between the Council, Parliament and Commission.
